Ice Cream and Macaron Making Workshops at 15 on Orange


We were invited to experience an intimate sorbet and ice cream making workshop at my favourite Cape Town hotel - 15 on Orange. Held in one of their penthouse suites, we were shown the various ways of making ice cream and sorbet - granita, sorbet, traditional ice cream maker - and even liquid nitrogen. Queue gasps of delight from the men in the audience.

These workshops are held at the hotel by members of their all-female chef squad, and can be quite hands-on - making them great for team building, or even birthdays and kitchen teas. While we were treated to the ice cream and sorbet workshop, the hotel also offers a macaron workshop. Having experienced trying to make these tricky beasts myself, I think this should be next on my skills hit list. At only R195 a person, it is also one of the more affordable options in the city.

We were shown how to make a raspberry Pimm’s granita, a granadilla sorbet, a nectarine sorbet and a (deliciously creamy) coconut sorbet - and also given a small pot of each to take home and enjoy at leisure. We enjoyed snacks and treats while watching the demo - with one of the best city views as a background - and left with a renewed passion for all things sweet and frozen. Will definitely be trying one of the sorbet recipes this summer.
