The Revamped Protea Fire & Ice Cape Town

We were recently invited to experience the revamped Protea Hotel Fire & Ice Hotel in Cape Town. Having stayed there before, and loved it, we were eager to return and see what had been changed.

Those changes? Not subtle. As you walk into the reception area, you are greeted by neutral creams, and whites - accented by natural greens. While the 'older' hotel was quite dark, with a more hip and edgy feel to it, I have to admit - the new look is very much my style.

In explaining the changes, the hotel wanted to create "a sea of light, natural space combined with an organic feel that is rooted deeply in Cape Town and make the hotel’s new public spaces fresh, relaxed and comfortable." Mission accomplished, I'd say.

Moving up to the rooms - nothing had changed - as the focus of the renovations was mainly on the communal areas. Comfortable, large bed, good shower, lovely views - it already ticked all the boxes for a convenient, comfortable city stay.

Along with the communal downstairs area, the next biggest change happened in the restaurant. What was previously a deck and koi pond, has now become an extension of the existing restaurant - which is now larger, lighter and more elegant - still serving the burgers they are famous for.

Their legendary milkshakes are also still available - with the offering having been taken up a notch. Guests can enjoy over 30 milkshake combinations at the milkshake bar, next to the lounge (with six more flavours heading our way for summer). Or, if your'e spending the night - there's no better way to enjoy your milkshake, than in bed.

If you find yourself in town after an exceptionally long night, the hotel will also soon be launching a breakfast burger - the perfect accompaniment to a triple espresso milkshake shots or a Red Bull Bloody Mary - this is the place you want to head to when the sunlight starts to hurt your eyes.
While the hotel started off eight years ago, as a quirky concept hotel, but the brand has had to grow with the needs of their guests - who are now demanding more sophisticated, technology-friendly spaces.

Personally - I love the new look. It's just more my style - open spaces, light, natural colours - and honestly, elegant. I'm looking forward to another sneaky visit - burgers and shakes by the pool? Yes, I think I will.

We enjoyed our stay as guests of the hotel. All images and views are my own.
