One sunny Sunday, we headed off to The Chart Farm in Wynberg. Close to home and a beautiful area to spend a little time outdoors, we took family from overseas to visit.
The premise is fairly simple - there are roses. There is a coffee shop too, but you go there for the roses. Either pick your own at R4 a stem (or discounted to R2 a stem on Sundays) or buy already picked blooms - there were also proteas available when we visited.
Purchased in 1934, the farm was originally was originally 20 hectares, but was
reduced to 18 hectares when the current M3 highway was built. The farm
currently has approximately 12 hectares of arable land and makes for lovely walks along the dirt paths - with lovely views.
The farm produces roses, compost & mulch, table grapes, chestnuts, lemons and wine grapes. It is amazing having a little oasis less than 10 minutes from home - any excuse to put on the wellington boots and go for a wander.
The coffee shop is simple - they serve a good slice of milk tart and generous portion of ice cream for children - don't expect a skinny latte or flat white. It makes for an adequate refueling station in between your farm wanderings. You are given a bucket and secateurs and effectively let lose among the roses. When you are done, simply hand in your bucket and flowers, which will be wrapped in newspaper for you, and pay your dues.
They are child-friendly (and dog friendly, if on a leash) - the Chart Farm makes for a rather delightful Sunday in Cape Town. Pay them a visit.
