Asian Style Beef Tataki

Near the end of last year, the lovely man and I enjoyed Bistro Sixteen82's 3rd birthday celebrations - it was an evening of great food-loving friends, and even better food. Every dish was fantastic, but their Beef Tataki was what had Luke and I talking for weeks afterwards. We had a rather special picnic planned for December, and thought it would be the perfect time to attempt it and add it to our outdoor feast. So simple, but packed with so much flavour - it's an ideal quick-and-easy meal for outdoor entertaining and warm afternoons.
Around the same time, I received a pack of goodies from Ecopack - sustainable and biodegradable packaging for the food and beverage industry - and for you. Absolutely perfect for packing into our picnic basket, and transporting our treats - it was a sign that this picnic was meant to happen! You can view their range of products here and buy from them directly here. Great for picnics, school or work lunches.

Back to our picnic  - this is what we feasted on  :
Selection of cheeses from Woolworths and Fairview
Roasted Tomato and Cape Fruit Mustard Tartlets
Asian Style Beef Tataki
Preserved Ginger and Dark Chocolate Florentines
Mince Pies
Beef Tataki

Serves 4

Ingredients:
400g beef fillet
drizzle of sesame oil for frying

75ml soy sauce
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp crushed ginger
1 tsp dried chilli flakes
1 tsp sesame oil
juice and zest from 1 lime
finely sliced spring onion
fresh coriander

Method:
Rub the beef with the drizzle of sesame oil and place in a hot, non stick frying pan. Seal on all sides until evenly brown and caramelised, but not cooked. Allow to rest on a board while you make the marinade. Add all ingredients and stir until well combined. Thinly slice the beef, and add to a bowl with the marinade - gently stirring the beef so each slice is coated in the sauce.

Allow to stand for at least an hour. Garnish with additional spring onion and coriander before serving, if desired.

Note : I was sent a selection of products to use from Ecopack, but was not asked to do a blog post, or compensated in any way.
