This past Sunday was our 6-month wedding anniversary. As we look for any occasion to celebrate, this ranked fairly highly in our do-something-special ratings. We had originally planned a City Sightseeing Tour and sushi feasting at Sevruga for the Sunday (more on that later this week) - so when an email arrived inviting us to spend the night at the newly refurbished Protea Hotel Sea Point, the timing could not have been more perfect. A weekend of celebrations? Yes, why not.
Situated
on the corner of Main and Arthur's Road in Sea Point, it's a block away
from Beach Road and within walking distance to many restaurants and
cafes. The hotel itself is light and bright and breezy - in white and
blue tones, it is calm and clean - and a welcome relief from the bustle
of Sea Point. Perhaps the highlight for us was the awesome deck area -
with deck chairs, a swimming pool and views of the mountain and ocean -
it was our first stop once we'd checked in. We also appreciated the
small touches - swimming towels with a little tube of sunscreen on each
lounger.
Our room was functional, with a little balcony too. After the luxury that was 15 on Orange,
it was a slight adjustment though - until I realised that the Sea Point
hotel was 3 stars - in the best way possible. Yes, there were no
slippers or robes, but the bed was large and comfortable and the small
details (like having a plug point near a mirror) were thought of. There
were a few holiday makers around - from upcountry and overseas - and it
makes a lovely little sea-side get away. Close enough to the beach and
promenade to be sprayed with salt water and also to an assortment of
restaurants to satisfy even the pickiest eater.
It was a lovely little seaside escape and helped us get to know Sea Point a little better. Would I like to go back? Definitely.
Note : We enjoyed our stay as guests of Protea Hotels and Irvine Bartlett.
