Last month our friends at Constantia Uitsig invited us to try their latest lunch offering at The River Cafe - a picnic lunch. Having spent many a happy afternoon on the wine farm, we were excited to return and spend a lazy afternoon on the lawns.
We collected our picnic hamper from The River Cafe, then drove to the lawns by the cricket pitch and La Colombe to find our perfect spot - dampled sunshine, gently swaying trees and soft lawn - it was easy to find.

With two large picnic baskets and blankets, we quickly settled down and started unpacking - and what followed with a truly ridiculous amount of food. What was meant to be a picnic for two, could have easily fed double that.
We enjoyed:
Vegetable spring rolls
Vegetable spring rolls
Quiches: meat & vegetable
Mini bruschetta [with bacon or without]
Chicken liver pate, selection of cheese & crackers
Mini French baguette
Chicken skewer with sweet chilli sauce
Mini Lamb Pita pocket with Tzatziki
Fruit skewers drizzled with honey & yogurt
Chocolate & strawberry profiteroles
Mini custard tarts
Cheese and crackers with onion marmalade
Mini beef burgers
Chocolate Brownies
Lemon Brulee slices

Along with the feast, there was also sparkling water and our choice of Constantia Uitsig wine (red or white) to enjoy. |
We spent a lovely few hours under the trees, feasting until we could no more. I was concerned about the mound of polystyrene we would be leaving behind - but I am now happy to report that Constantia Uitsig are in talks with Eco Pack to discuss more eco-friendly packaging solutions. |
Note : We enjoyed this picnic as guests of The River Cafe. All images and opinions are my own.
Great post - its unfortunate that they've stopped offering the picnic spot.
