A
family friendly restaurant situated just off the cricket field, their
location makes them the perfect go-to for post cricket practices or even
a snack after gym - but also, a convenient restaurant for families in
the area looking for well-priced, home-style food.
When
we visited for dinner, all the tables around us were occupied by
families - we were having an early dinner at 18h30, so perhaps it's also
peak family-dinner time. The menu is wholesome, almost pub-fare, but
done really well. Luke had the creamy, spiced chicken livers to start,
while I had the salt and pepper calamari. Both were wonderful. The
chicken livers were rich and lay in puddles of sauce - perfectly served
with a baguette on the side.
My calamari was light, tender and crunchy - with a garlic mayonnaise and salad on the side, it was a lovely start to our meal.
I
decided on the steak for mains (which comes with a choice of sauces)
and Luke chose the lamb shank. Both portions were generous, and my steak
was cooked exactly medium-rare with the most unexpectedly crunchy, thin
chips - I couldn't have asked for more. It was served with roasted baby
marrow and red pepper - nice, but not needed.
Luke's lamb shank was tender - if a little chewy - and very large. He struggled to finish it and left some of the mash behind.
It's
a cosy venue with great views and delicious food. I kept comparing it
to 'pub' food throughout the meal - but not as South Africans tend to
think of it. Not greasy pies and oily fish - but hearty, generous food
done well. Food that is familiar and comforting - that you could
probably cook at home, but is still a treat to enjoy when someone else
does it well. And the Constantia Clubhouse does.
Our only regret? Not having space for dessert. Next time...
Note : We enjoyed our meal as guests of the Constantia Clubhouse. All opinions and images are my own.
