We were recently invited to experience the relaunch of the (famous) Bottomless Bubbly Sunday lunches at the 15 on Orange Hotel in Cape Town. We also enjoyed a stay at the hotel the previous night – but that is for another (rather luxurious) blog post.
When the invitation arrived, I was immediately honest regarding my views of visiting a hotel for their food. While most hotels offer decent to great accommodation, very few delight or excel with their food. So, I was a little skeptic, but enthusiastic none the less.
With lunch fully booked out, all guests were greeted with a glass of bubbly on arrival – a selection of Graham Beck’s MCC. Keeping in mind that the bubbly is indeed bottomless (one table having notoriously finished 16 bottles between 14 people), I happily stuck to my one glass. But the option is there, should you wish to take advantage of it.
So, what was this ‘hotel food’ like? Pretty darn marvelous. A vast array of cold dishes made up the majority of the selection –
with everything from beef tataki, Vietnamese rice paper rolls, sushi, prawn
cocktail, cobb salad, cheeses and breads to oysters and duck liver brulee on
offer.
There was a smaller selection of hot dishes on
offer – chermoula lamb cutlets, Thai seafood curry, gnocchi with a blue cheese
sauce and linefish. I sampled the lamb and the Thai seafood curry and was more
than happy with both.
Regardless of whether we were dining
at a hotel or not – the food was fantastic. It’s not a traditional Sunday lunch
– if you are looking for a roast and Yorkshire Puddings, I’ll let you know
where to go. However, it is a wonderful venue and concept for a special
occasion lunch with family or friends – the Bottomless Bubbly Sunday lunch is
offered on the first Sunday of every month, at R495 a person. Booking is
essential.
Note
: We were invited to enjoy lunch and spend the night at the hotel - we
enjoyed our stay and meals as guests of 15 on Orange.
